Practice Exam 3
Compuestos y perífrasis
No notes and no conjugation table. Write every answer in full before you open a solution. Each question maps to one section of the Unit 3 notes. On items marked “each”, give yourself partial credit per blank.
Give the past participle: (a) romper (b) describir (c) resolver (d) traer (e) poner (f) devolver (g) morir (h) construir (i) satisfacer (j) oír
Solution
(a) roto · (b) descrito · (c) resuelto · (d) traído · (e) puesto · (f) devuelto · (g) muerto · (h) construido · (i) satisfecho · (j) oído
(d) and (j) need the accent, because the stem ends in a strong vowel. (h) doesn’t, because ui is already a diphthong. (b), (f) and (i) follow the rule that a compound inherits its base verb’s irregularity (escrito, vuelto, hecho).
Complete the paragraph with the correct form of each verb. Use a compound tense only where the meaning requires it; some blanks want a simple tense.
Cuando mi abuela (1) ___ (llegar) a Nueva York en 1968, nunca antes (2) ___ (ver) la nieve. Ella siempre dice que desde entonces (3) ___ (aprender) a quererla. Este invierno ya (4) ___ (nevar) tres veces y ella (5) ___ (salir) a pasear cada vez. Mi madre dice que para el próximo año mi abuela (6) ___ (vivir) en este país más de sesenta años.
Solution
- llegó: a single completed past event in a closed year, so preterite.
- había visto: before the arrival (nunca antes), so pluperfect.
- ha aprendido: desde entonces runs up to now, so present perfect.
- ha nevado: este invierno is still open, and ya confirms it.
- ha salido: the same open frame (salió is acceptable in Latin American usage; either scores).
- habrá vivido: completed before a future point (para el próximo año), so future perfect.
Rewrite the underlined idea with a single verb expressing probability. No probablemente and no deber de.
- Creo que los invitados ya han llegado; hay muchos coches fuera.
- Supongo que eran las tres cuando terminó la reunión.
- ¿Dónde están mis llaves? Seguramente las dejé en el coche. (present-perfect frame: I’ve probably left them)
- Cuando volví, Marta ya no estaba. Me imagino que se había cansado de esperar.
Solution
- Los invitados ya habrán llegado. Present perfect → future perfect.
- Serían las tres cuando terminó la reunión. Imperfect → conditional.
- Las habré dejado en el coche. Future perfect; the pronoun goes before haber.
- Se habría cansado de esperar. Pluperfect → conditional perfect.
Rule: move the verb one tense forward (present→future, past→conditional), keeping any compound as a compound.
Rewrite in the progressive, keeping the tense of the original. Where the progressive would be wrong Spanish, say so and explain.
- Los niños duermen.
- Cuando sonó el teléfono, yo leía el periódico.
- Los manifestantes pidieron justicia durante tres horas.
- Te lo explico ahora mismo. (attach the pronouns)
- Salgo para Quito mañana.
Solution
- Los niños están durmiendo. o→u in the gerund of an -ir stem-changer.
- Cuando sonó el teléfono, yo estaba leyendo el periódico. -yendo; imperfect progressive for the interrupted background.
- Los manifestantes estuvieron pidiendo justicia durante tres horas. Closed duration → preterite of estar; e→i in pidiendo.
- Estoy explicándotelo ahora mismo. Accent on á once two pronouns are attached. (Te lo estoy explicando is also correct but wasn’t asked.)
- Not possible. This is a future plan, and Spanish uses the present (salgo) or voy a salir. ×Estoy saliendo para Quito mañana is an anglicism.
Rewrite each sentence twice: (i) passive with ser keeping the agent, and (ii) pasiva refleja without it.
- El ayuntamiento cerró las bibliotecas.
- Los estudiantes han organizado una campaña de reciclaje.
Then (c) correct the error, and (d) say which sentence is an impersonal se and why the verb is singular:
- En esta tienda se vende productos locales.
- Se contrató a dos nuevas profesoras. / Se compraron dos nuevas computadoras.
Solution
- (i) Las bibliotecas fueron cerradas por el ayuntamiento. (ii) Se cerraron las bibliotecas.
- (i) Una campaña de reciclaje ha sido organizada por los estudiantes. (ii) Se ha organizado una campaña de reciclaje.
- En esta tienda se venden productos locales. In the pasiva refleja the verb agrees with the thing: productos is plural.
- Se contrató a dos nuevas profesoras is the impersonal se. The object is a person marked with personal a, so the verb stays singular. Se compraron dos nuevas computadoras is a pasiva refleja: no personal a, and the verb agrees with the plural thing.
Watch the agreement in (b)(i): sido never changes; organizada agrees with campaña.
Choose the best English meaning.
- No volvimos a verlo. — (1) We didn’t go back to see him. (2) We never saw him again. (3) We didn’t return his visit.

- Tardó un año en aprender a nadar. — (1) She learned late. (2) She waited a year to learn. (3) It took her a year to learn to swim.
Solution
(a) 2: volver a means “again”. (b) 2: acabar de in the imperfect means “had just”; option 1 is the trap for anyone reading acabar as “finish”. (c) 1: deber de expresses probability. (d) 2: llevar + time + gerund means an ongoing duration. (e) 3: tardar en means it took (time) to.
Each sentence has exactly one error. Find it and correct it.
- Mis padres nunca han vistos el mar.
- Antes de saliendo, cerré todas las ventanas.
- El año pasado hemos visitado Guatemala.
- Ellos tenían ya terminado el proyecto cuando llegó la profesora.
- Habían muchas personas en la plaza.
Solution
- han visto: the participle is invariable after haber.
- Antes de salir: always the infinitive after a preposition.
- El año pasado visitamos: a closed time frame takes the preterite.
- Ellos ya habían terminado: the helper is haber, not tener, and ya goes before the whole unit.
- Había muchas personas: existential haber is always singular.
Translate into Spanish.
- After having read the three sources, I have decided that the city should invest in public transport.
- By 2040, scientists will have discovered new ways to store solar energy.

Scoring: 1 pt for the key verb structure, 1 for the other verbs, 1 for everything else. In (d), ×hemos estado viviendo por diez años is understandable but is an anglicism. Give it 2/3.
Fill each blank with the right non-finite form of the verb in parentheses.

| Pts | Criterion |
|---|---|
| 6 | One point for each required structure, used correctly and with the right meaning. |
| 2 | Participles, accents and agreement accurate throughout (−1 per error type). |
| 2 | Reads as one connected paragraph with transitions (sin embargo, desde entonces, para cuando). |
Scoring
| Score | Where you are |
|---|---|
| 90–100 | Solid. On to the subjunctive, where every one of these compounds comes back with haya and hubiera. |
| 75–89 | The system is right but the details are slipping: accents on -ído, participle agreement, pronoun position. Go back through the participle list and do a 20-streak on the mixed drill. |
| 60–74 | Tense choice is the problem (Q2, Q3). Re-read Section 3, especially the timeline and the probability ladder. |
| < 60 | Start at Section 1: haber in every tense has to be automatic before any of the rest works. Then redo this exam in a week. |
Rompido and volvido (Q1); the perfect used for a closed past, as in el año pasado hemos… (Q2, Q7); a progressive for a future plan (Q4e); a pasiva refleja verb that doesn’t agree with its plural subject (Q5c); reading acabar de as “finish” (Q6b); and a gerund after a preposition (Q7b), the single most common anglicism in AP essays.
