CoversUnit 2

Work on paper, no notes, timed. The AP exam never asks you to fill in a conjugation grid, but every free-response task is scored partly on control of these forms — this exam checks them in isolation first, then in context. A missing accent that changes the form (hablo / habló) is wrong; award yourself half credit at most.

Solution

1. estuve · 2. hizo · 3. dijeron · 4. pudimos · 5. trajeron · 6. fuiste · 7. leyó · 8. prefirieron · 9. llegué · 10. di

Hizo (c → z), dijeron / trajeron (no i after j), di (no accent), prefirieron (‑ir third-person change), llegué (g → gu). Anyone who wrote *estuvé or *pudímos: the strong preterites carry no accents. Section 3.

3Pretérito or imperfecto in a narrative14 pts

Complete the story with the preterite or imperfect of each verb. One point per blank, plus two points for justifying any two of your choices in English.

Narración

La gente (10. llevar) ___ ropa de colores y (11. bailar) ___ al ritmo de la música. Esa tarde (12. saber) ___ que era la fiesta del Inti Raymi.

Solution
  1. tenía — edad.
  2. hicimos — el viaje como un evento completo.
  3. Era — fecha / fondo.
  4. hacía — tiempo atmosférico.
  5. se levantaba — hábito (todas las mañanas).
  6. salía — hábito.
  7. desayunábamos — acción en progreso (mientras).
  8. empezó — el evento que interrumpe; comienzo.
  9. corrimos — reacción, nuevo evento.
  10. llevaba — descripción de la escena (la gente is singular).
  11. bailaba — descripción, acción en progreso.
  12. supe / supimos — “found out”: the moment of learning.

Justification points: any two correct reasons such as “#8 is the event that interrupts the ongoing breakfast in #7” or “#12 preterite of saber = found out”. Inti Raymi, the Inca festival of the sun, is celebrated in Cusco every June 24. See Section 5.

4Future & conditional stems8 pts

Solution

1. tendré · 2. diremos · 3. saldrán · 4. habrá · 5. pondrías · 6. haría · 7. querría · 8. sabrían

Endings are identical for every verb; only the stem is irregular. *Tenré, *hacerá, *quererá are the typical slips. Section 6.

Translate into Spanish. Two points each.

  1. We met the new teacher yesterday.
  2. I knew the answer, but I was nervous.
  3. She found out that the museum was closed.
  4. They tried to call you, but they couldn't (failed).

  2. Sabía la respuesta, pero estaba nervioso/a.
  3. Supo que el museo estaba cerrado.
  4. Quisieron llamarte, pero no pudieron.
  5. No quiso comer la sopa.

One point for the right verb, one for the right tense. Personal a in #1 (conocimos al profesor) is required. Section 5.

6Error correction12 pts

Each sentence has exactly one verb error. Find it and correct it. Two points each.

  1. Cuando fui niño, vivía en Monterrey.
  2. Ayer mi hermano durmió diez horas y yo leyí toda la tarde.
  3. Habían muchos turistas en la plaza.
  4. El año pasado estuvé en Costa Rica por dos semanas.
  5. Hace tres años que estudié piano y todavía me encanta.
  6. Mis padres me dijieron que el viaje sería largo.
Solution
  1. era niño — age/stage of life is imperfect.
  2. yo leí — leer is regular with an accent: leí, leíste.
  3. Había muchos turistas — impersonal haber is always singular.
  4. estuve — strong preterites have no accent.
  5. Hace tres años que estudio — still going on (todavía), so present.
  6. dijeron — j-stems drop the i.

(b) Nos mudamos aquí hace seis meses. (2 pts)

(c) Mi amiga dijo que vendría a la fiesta y que traería un pastel. (3 pts: one per verb)

9Translation10 pts

Translate into Spanish. Points for the correct tense and form of each verb.

  1. Every summer we would go to the beach, but last summer we stayed home. (3)
  2. It was raining when the game started. (2)
  3. Could you tell me what time the museum opens? (2)
  4. In the future, people will work fewer hours and will have more free time. (3)
Solution

  2. Llovía / Estaba lloviendo cuando empezó el partido.
  3. ¿Podría decirme a qué hora abre el museo?
  4. En el futuro, la gente trabajará menos horas y tendrá más tiempo libre. La gente is singular: trabajará, not *trabajarán.
10Short writing: a memorable day10 pts
Instrucciones

Escribe un párrafo de 100 a 120 palabras sobre un día inolvidable de tu vida. Describe dónde estabas y cómo era el lugar, cuenta qué pasó, y termina con lo que harías diferente o lo que harás la próxima vez. Usa por lo menos cuatro de los cinco tiempos de esta unidad.

Tu párrafo

Score: 4 pts for accurate preterite/imperfect contrast, 2 for a correct future or conditional, 2 for range of vocabulary and connectors, 2 for completing all parts of the task.

Model answer
Respuesta modelo

Imperfect for the scene (era, hacía, estaba, bailaba), preterite for the events, a conditional (sacaría) and a future (bailaré). It also slips in a pluperfect (había llegado) and a si-clause — previews of Units 3 and 4, the kind of range that lifts an AP response from 4 to 5.

Scoring

ScoreWhere you are
90–100Solid. On to compound tenses.
75–89Forms are mostly right; the losses are accents and a few strong preterites. Run the mixed drill with Irregulares until you hold a streak of 15.
60–74The preterite/imperfect choice is costing you. Re-read Section 5, especially the annotated narrative, then redo Q3 and Q9.
< 60Go back to Section 2 and Section 3 — the forms have to be automatic before the choices between them can be.
Where the points usually go

Accents on strong preterites (*tuvé, *hizó) in Q2 and Q6; choosing the imperfect for a closed span of time or the preterite for age and weather in Q3; *habían for “there were”; and translating the habitual “would” with a conditional in Q9.
